COMMUNITY CALENDAR – Sept. 14-28

Here’s a look at things going on in and around Jackson in the next couple weeks.

Sept. 14

Women in Business

The Greater Jackson Chamber presents its monthly Women in Business program, and this year’s theme is self defense. It will be at the DoubleTree Hotel (1770 Highway 45 Bypass in Jackson) from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., and registration is $25 for members of the Chamber and $35 for non-members. Come hear Officer Taylor Gibbons, a 7yr patrol officer/2yr Defensive Tactics instructor, and Captain Terry Halford, a 30 yr police officer with over all training and homeland Security, discuss mental preparedness for attacks and things to be aware of in day to day situations. They will also discuss the Equalizer program for Women’s Self Defense.

Salt & Light Benefit Dinner

Join Area Relief Ministry and its supporters for the 47th Salt & Light Dinner at the Carl Perkins Civic Center (400 South Highland Avenue in Downtown Jackson). The Jackson Symphony will be performing “Let Your Light Shine” with encouraging and spiritual songs. There will be special performances from LOLO, Vonda Peet and Candice Goff with a mass choir from Lane College, Union University and the Hub City Choir. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Concert ONLY tickets are available in the balcony for $25 and can be purchased online at Eventbrite.com.

West Tennessee State Fair

The fair returned to Jackson Fairgrounds this past Tuesday and will be here until Sunday. Tommy Vee will have a hypnotism show each day. Here’s a schedule of when gates open and close each day:

Thursday – Gates open at 5 p.m. Miss Tiny Fairest of the Fair at 7 p.m. and Miss Petite Fairest of the Fair at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 and an arm band to ride rides is $20. Gates close at 10 p.m.

Friday – Gates open at 5 p.m. Tickets will be $5 until 8 p.m. After that, they’ll be $10. The Commercial Ewe and Market Lamb Show will happen at 6 p.m. Admission is $5, and an arm band to ride rides is $25. Gates close at 10 p.m.

Saturday – Gates open at 11 a.m. for $5. There will be a breeding sheep show at noon, birds of prey and snakes at 1 p.m., baby girl Fairest of the Fair at 2 p.m., baby boy Fairest of the Fair at 4 p.m., Mister Tiny Fairest of the Fair at 4 p.m. and hypnotism shows at 1, 4 and 6:30 p.m. Arm band to ride rides is $25. Gates close at 10:30 p.m.

Sunday – The exhibit building will open at 10:30 a.m. for a free church service conducted by the people of Lambuth Memorial United Methodist Church that begins at 11 a.m. After that, festivities for the final day begin with birds of prey show at noon. Also at noon, senior day and special needs visitors ride for an hour. Gates officially open for the public at 1 p.m. Hypnotism shows at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. happen before gates close at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 and an arm band to ride rides is $20.

Sept. 15

Food Truck Fridays

Downtown Jackson and the West TN Farmers Market (91 New Market Street in Downtown Jackson) bring you Food Truck Fridays! Make plans to join them every Friday, May through November, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to experience local eateries at lunch to end your work week and support local businesses. 

Wine Down

Crown Winery (3638 East Mitchell Street in Humboldt) is back with its Wine Down concert series. Remember when booking your table reservations to also go ahead and do your pizza reservations. The pizzas time slots go fast.
Visit their website www.crownwinery.com and book online. This week’s entertainment is Missing Fifth. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Fall Hub City Pickleball Tournament

The Fall Hub City Pickleball Tournament sponsored by Rock-N-Roll Sushi will be held Sept. 15-17 at Conger Park (1453 North Highland Avenue in Jackson). Food will be on site. Snacks provided. It will be a round robin format with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded and a seven-game minimum. Registration until Sept. 8 is $65. Friday tournament is singles and youth ages 8-17, Saturday is men’s and women’s doubles and Sunday is mixed doubles. Sept. 16

Sip & Shop

Century Farm Winery (1548 Lower Brownsville Road) is hosting Sip & Shop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a day of wine, shopping, and delectable treats at the winery. Get ready for an event featuring 50 vendors showcasing a wide array of treasures from unique crafts and stunning woodwork to exquisite jewelry and mouthwatering homemade treats, you’re sure to find something you love. Admission is free. Bring your friends and family along for a day of fun, shopping, sipping, and celebrating the joys of autumn.

Jackson Symphony’s Greek Fantasia

Experience the power and drama of epic Greek mythological tales and heroes as told through music. This performance, in partnership with the Jackson-Madison County Library’s Big Read program, will feature Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, as heard in Disney’s Fantasia. Show starts at 7 p.m. at The Ned (314 East Main Street in Downtown Jackson). Tickets are available at thejacksonsymphony.org for $40 apiece.

Voices in the Vineyard

Century Farm Winery (1548 Lower Brownsville Road in Jackson) continues its summer concert series with Blue-Eyed Sun at 7 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. Limited tables are available. Lawn chairs are available.

Sept. 17

Festival of the Hymns

This year marks the 200th Anniversary of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson. Join them as they celebrate this milestone. At 9:30am, all are invited to join First Presbyterian Church (1573 North Highland Avenue) for a special worship service celebrating the traditional hymns of their faith.

Sept. 19

Emerging Leaders

The Greater Jackson Chamber presents its monthly Emerging Leaders event co-hosted by United Way of West Tennessee. The event will start at Jackson’s Kitchen & Catering, split into two groups for a downtown tour and end at Hub City Brewing. Come enjoy networking, food and drinks while learning about the history of downtown and what is to come in the future. Only 50 tickets are available, and attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes. Emerging Leaders is for emerging business professionals ages 22 –  35. This program is designed to create an avenue for young professionals to connect with networking events, develop professionally with programs and engage within our community through awareness.

Sept. 21

Business After Hours

DoubleTree Hotel (1770 Highway 45 Bypass in Jackson) will be this month’s host of The Greater Jackson Chamber’s networking event. Chamber members are invited to attend to make contacts, network and enjoy hours d’oeuvres from 5-7 p.m.

CASA Rock and Roll Cornhole tournament

CASA of West Tennessee announces the return of its annual fundraiser, the Rock and Roll Cornhole Tournament. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of West Tennessee is a nonprofit organization advocating for children from abusive and neglectful homes. Volunteers from the community provide support and guidance for these children within the juvenile court system, creating a safe, nurturing environment during their time of need. The event is at the West Tennessee Farmer’s Market (91 New Market Street in Downtown Jackson) from 6-10 p.m. Registration starts at $400 for a sponsored team. Sept. 22

Chamber Member Breakfast

Tennessee Economic Development Commissioner David Salyers will be at the Carl Grant Center on the campus of Union University at 9 a.m. for a Greater Jackson Chamber Member Breakfast to discuss how Gov. Bill Lee’s conservation strategies are contributing to strengthening the state’s economy. He’ll touch on Middle Fork Bottoms State Park as well as improvements being made at other nearby parks.

Chester County BBQ Festival

Nearby Henderson will have its 44th annual Chester County BBQ Festival with barbecue, live entertainment, fried treats, children’s activities and vendors invading downtown Henderson Friday and Saturday. Admission into the festival is free with charges for merchandise and food. It begins Friday at 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. then on Saturday 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Tina Turner Heritage Days

The 12th annual Tina Turner Heritage Days kicks off for the weekend at the Tina Turner Museum (121 Sunny Hill Cove in Brownsville). Festivities will happen through Sunday. The weekend will include tours to Nutbush, music and hearing from some who were connected to the international musical icon who grew up in Haywood County. This will be the first festival since the legendary singer died earlier this year.

Sept. 23

Jackson International Food and Arts Festival

The Jackson International Food and Art Festival spreads cultural awareness, promotes cross-cultural engagement, and celebrates the diverse backgrounds of residents throughout West Tennessee.  Food and art are important themes present in all cultures, countries, and religions, and the festival serves as a place for all cultures to share their cuisine, art, and traditional performances at the Jackson Fairgrounds (800 South Highland Avenue in Downtown Jackson). Be a vendor, join the parade and showcase your talent at the festival. Register at www.JIFAF.com.

Huntingdon Heritage Festival

The court square in Huntingdon is a place to go for vendors, food trucks and more. The main event of festival is a free performance by legendary country music group The Oak Ridge Boys from 2-3:30 p.m. For more information, send an email to kdill@huntingdonch.com.

Friends of Heart Bike Ride

Join Friends of Heart for its annual bike ride to benefit local cardiac care at The LIFT (101 Jackson Walk Plaza in Downtown Jackson). Registration is 7 a.m. with bikers leaving at 7:30. There are 15-, 30- and 60-mile route options with door prizes awarded at noon. For more information, call 731-343-3330.

Crockett County Harvest Festival

The people of Crockett County will gather at the Court Square in Alamo at 2 p.m. to celebrate harvest time and enjoy each other’s company with live music, food and vendors until 6 p.m.

Hot Wing Festival

The second annual Hot Wing Festival will begin at 4 p.m. at the West Tennessee Farmer’s Market (91 New Market Street in Downtown Jackson). Bring your family and friends to indulge in some of the best wings Tennessee has to offer. With a wing eating contest, music, shopping, and a kids’ corner, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. There will be food vendors to showcase their skills in a wing competition. Will you be brave enough to try them all? This event is free and open to the public until 9 p.m.


Sept. 28

Canstruction 2023: An Evening with The Cleverlys

RIFA’s 18th annual Canstruction competition and gala will be at the Carl Perkins Civic Center at 6 p.m. Larger-than-life structures made entirely with canned food by local teams will be on display, and enjoy a live performance by the bluegrass/comedy band, The Cleverlys. All proceeds will benefit RIFA’s vision to lead and engage the community in the fight against hunger. The Cleverlys are a one-of-a-kind comedy/music blend. They tour nationally, performing at music venues, performing arts centers, and some of the nation’s largest festivals like Stagecoach, Telluride, CMA Music Fest, and even The Grand Ole Opry. Madison Hall Community Yard Sale

Calling all yard sale fans. The Madison Hall Community Club announces its gigantic annual Yard and Bake Sale. Dates are Sept. 28-30 at the Community Center on Steam Mill Ferry Road in the Madison Hall Community. Shopping begins Thursday and Friday at 8 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.  Saturday will be half-price day on all sale merchandise, ending at noon.
