Baker honored with weekly award

Staff reports

Union softball’s Lainey Baker has been named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Mar. 31.

Baker, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Cartersville, Ga., pitched a complete game shutout in Union’s game one win over Henderson State University this week. She struck out seven batters, allowing only one hit, and was five outs away from a perfect game, until she hit her only batter in the bottom of the sixth.

Up next, Baker and the Lady Bulldogs travel to Pensacola, Fla., for a three-game series with GSC opponent the University of West Florida. Games one and two are scheduled to be played on Apr. 5 with a start time of 1 p.m.

The Lady Bulldogs enter the series with a 22-14 record and a three-game win streak.

After the trip to West Florida, the Lady Bulldogs will play all their games over the following two weeks at home with the opponents including Lane, Lee, Ouachita Baptist from Arkansas and Montevallo from Alabama.
