Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s gearing up for annual crawfish boil

The athletics departments at Sacred Heart of Jesus High School at St. Mary’s Middle School are gearing up for one of their biggest fundraisers of the year when their annual crawfish boil at the Nelson’s Barn will be happening.

It’s set to happen on May 25 from 4-9 p.m. at 99 Hickory Glen Drive in North Jackson.

“This event has been happening for about a decade now, and it’s grown every year and a lot of fun,” said Lisa Ragsdale, a longtime parent and spokesperson for both schools. “They have all you can eat crawfish, shrimp, corn, potatoes and anything else that goes with a crawfish boil.”

While it is designed to raise funds for sports, the event’s coordinators are also mindful of families who might want to be a part of it.

“It’s a family-friendly event, and that even means friendly for the wallet of the family,” Ragsdale said. “It’s $40 per person with a maximum of $100 for a family.”

One added part to this year’s event is for those who purchase an entire table, they can show up early and be a part of a table decorating contest. The winning table decorator wins a table for the 2025 crawfish boil.

Tickets can be purchased at the door that day or in person at either school. There are also opportunities to purchase tickets online at each school’s website.

“Playing high school and middle school sports can get expensive quickly,” Ragsdale said. “So the money from this goes to offset some of those costs for the teams.”

The barn has a playground area for children to play on while their parents enjoy fellowship with friends while eating crawfish.

“Every year, you’ll see people from all walks of life in Jackson coming to this event,” Ragsdale said. “You’ll see people from literally every school in Jackson – public and private – at this event because people like to eat crawfish.

“So this is a great way to cap the school year and get summer kicked off in Memorial Day weekend.”

Local musician Skylar Anderson will be performing at the event as well.
