JCM claims Commissioners' Cup; South Side, TCA, JC roll to wins

Posted

The football game between Jackson Central-Merry and North Side was about all any fan of either team could want in JCM's 27-21 win.
A big crowd was at the Reservation watching a close game as it looked like North Side had control when it took a 21-20 lead after a six-yard run by Myles Howard to tie the game and the ensuing PAT gave them the lead.
But JCM still had 81 seconds to get down field, which the Cougars did on a few well-placed passes, perfectly-timed runs and a couple of penalties.
With 13 seconds left, JCM snapped the ball from the North Side 10, QB Terell Williams looked left initially from the pocket before finding Jaylen Young in one-on-one coverage in the right corner of the end zone. He threw it, and Young came down with it for the lead with six seconds remaining.
North Side ran four seconds off the clock returning a squib kick, and the final two seconds ticked off on an incomplete pass play, giving JCM the win, the continued unbeaten season at 6-0 and the Commissioners' Cup.
Head coach Erit Turner was full of emotion for his team and his receiver after getting a dumped with a cooler to celebrate the victory.
"Jaylen is one of the 17 that's been with us from Day 1 when we first started working to bring this thing back," Turner said. "He comes in every day, does what he's supposed to do in practice, probably should get more touches in the game but he understands that we're taking what the defense gives us.
"But when we call his number when the game is on the line, he's ready for it. For any college coach or recruiter that is watching this or will read this, you are missing out on the most underrated receiver in the state because I think he's the best in the state."
Here's a look at how other games went in the county:

South Side 54, Bolivar 6: Friday was a bad night to be a Bolivar Tiger. The Hawks scored three times in the first quarter for a 20-0 lead and kept pouring the offense on like a team looking to silence some critics as they led 34-0 at half and 41-0 after three quarters.

Trinity Christian 60, Harding Academy 8: The Lions jumped out to a big lead with defense and special teams as Kaleb Williams and Brayden Waller each had two interception returns for touchdowns and Williams had a third score off a kick return for a touchdown.
With a 40-0 lead after the first quarter, the Lions were able to coast to the Division II-A West victory and remain perfect in league play.

Jackson Christian 51, FACS 3: Deuce Lawrence led the Eagles to the lop-sided win with 126 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries.
Austin Kelley and Jay'Len Mosley hooked up for a pair of touchdown passes for 65 and 9 yards.
The Eagle defense got in on the scoring by forcing a safety in the first half.
The Eagles and TCA are now officially the only two remaining undefeated teams in their region as they both have a couple games before they're set to meet on Nov. 1 at Ronnie Fowler Field.

Northpoint Christian 24, University School of Jackson 21: A last-second field goal proved to be the difference in this game as the Bruins proved they are a team to be dealt with down the stretch of the season as the Division II-AA West championship race begins to come into focus.
Both schools still have to play defending region champ Lausanne, and USJ goes to an improved ECS team next week.
In this game, Noah Spencer carried the ball 22 times for 152 yards and a pair of scores.
Corben Howard returned to action by completing 16 of 19 passes for 205 yards with a touchdown pass to Mills Terry, who led the receivers with four receptions for 45 yards.
