Question: A father asks, “At what age is it best to start reading the Bible to our children? I am not sure they will understand it.”
Jerry: Here is a father who feels the necessity of reading the Bible to his children. I wish more fathers shared this concern. Let me be quick to say to all fathers and mothers, no one not even those referred to as biblical scholars understand all the scriptures. This is one reason Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 19:14) While the Word of God is certainly to be engaged on an academic level, it is also approachable with an innocent childlike wonder. Embracing the Bible with this sense of amazement allows its truths to inspire and shape the heart, just as much as intellectual study expands the mind. This balance between academic pursuit and childlike openness reveals truths which would otherwise remain hidden.
Becky: The time to begin planting the seeds of interest and significance in this timeless book is as soon as a child recognizes the voices of its father and mother. It begins with bedtime stories in simple language with bright, bold, colorful pictures which capture their imagination. The word of God inspires, stimulates, and develops a sounds basis for a deeper understanding of the timeless applications behind their stories. When you begin reading the Bible to your child and start with the familiar phrase, “Once upon a time…,” you can assure them that these stories are not mere fairy tales or fictional accounts. Instead, you are sharing events that genuinely occurred. The narratives found in the Bible are rooted in actual history, and you can give your child the assurance that what they are hearing is true and trustworthy. This helps establish a foundation of faith and encourages them to view the Bible as a reliable source of wisdom and guidance throughout their lives.
Jerry: In this darkened world know that the Bible is your children’s source of strength and direction on their journey call life. We read in Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” There is no greater source of instruction for intellectual and educational development than the Word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16 reminds us that, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.” And what greater foundation for acquiring moral and ethical principles than the inspired, inerrant, infallible wisdom found in Holy Scripture. Psalm 119:11 gives us the key to unlock this boundless supply of treasure, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” It is never too early to start introducing your children to the greatest book ever written – the Word of God.
