HOPE FOR THE HOME: Marriage resolutions for 2026

Posted

Jerry and Becky: It is that time of the year. We await the midnight hour of 2025 and the sunrise of 2026. Each year approximately 30% of adults set New Year’s resolutions. On average, people stick with their resolutions for around 3.7 months. While this may seem discouraging research shows that people who set specific goals are significantly more likely to achieve them than those who rely on vague intentions. The key to keeping resolutions is commitment. So, with that in mind, Becky and I encourage all married couples to consider the following Marriage Resolutions for 2026.

  1. Value your spouse's opinion.
  2. Show more attention to your spouse than to other people.
  3. Do not give the "silent treatment".
  4. Schedule special time to be together.
  5. Be open to talk about things that you do not understand.
  6. Give an opportunity for equal input on important decisions.
  7. Do not make jokes about sensitive subjects of your spouse's life.
  8. Do not insult your spouse in front of others.
  9. Do not give quick responses.
  10. Do not use careless words before you think through their impact.
  11. Do not raise your voice.
  12. Do not swear nor use foul language.
  13. Do not correct your spouse in public.
  14. Do not have judgmental attitudes.
  15. Do not pressure your spouse when he/she is already feeling low.
  16. Do not lecture your spouse when comfort and encouragement is needed.
  17. Do not break promises without asking to be released from the promise.
  18. Do not make comparisons between your spouse and others.
  19. Be respectful of your spouse's family and relatives.
  20. Do not coerce your spouse into an argument.
  21. Praise your spouse for things done well, especially when it is for you.
  22. Do not treat your spouse in a condescending way.
  23. Above all, schedule a time together each day with scripture and prayer.
