HOPE FOR THE HOME: Considering abortion is a decision that can have years of impact

Posted

Husband/Wife: This is very difficult to share, but my husband and I have three children and just found out that we are expecting a fourth child. I am in my mid-forties and know this is a high-risk pregnancy. When our doctor informed us of the probable results of continuing the pregnancy it caused us to consider what before was unimaginable. We have always been pro-life advocates, and the thought of an abortion goes against our beliefs. We read your column regularly and would appreciate any counsel you two are willing to share.

Jerry: This is truly a life and death situation in which you find yourselves, First, you two are to be commended for facing this crisis together. Second, you two are obviously very family focused, having been blessed with three children. Third, the value and sanctity of life is highly regarded. Fourth, if you are a Christian couple then you know where the scriptures stand on the topic of abortion. Genesis 1:27, Exodus 20:13, Deuteronomy 30:19, Psalm 139:13-17, and Acts 17:25b are just a few verses which give clear advice concerning the significance of life. Fifth, are you members of a church and if so, have you sought the guidance of your pastor?

Becky: Sharing as a mother, I understand the potential medical complications of a high-risk pregnancy. Sharing as a wife, it is a decision which each of you must agree upon because the consequences of your choice will affect not only the life of the baby you are now carrying it will greatly influence unseen decisions in the future. Jerry and I have close friends who found themselves in identical circumstances several years ago. She and her husband were strongly encouraged by their doctor to proceed with the abortion. They prayed about this life-changing decision and without hesitation decided to continue with the pregnancy. A few months later she gave birth to a healthy baby boy. His name is Tim Tebow. Only God knows the future for you, your husband and the baby. Healthy or unhealthy, strong or weak, God’s grace and guidance is more than sufficient. This journey should you decide to continue with the pregnancy will teach each of you more about the nature of God than a million sermons.

Jerry: As much as possible be unified in this life changing decision. Otherwise, more than just the abortion of a baby may take place. It is our prayer that together you will choose life. Know this, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths,” (Proverbs 3: 6).
