The Madison County Commission will vote on Monday about a resolution calling on the United States Postal Service to improve its local service in the county.
A copy of the resolution was shown at the Republican caucus on June 10.
The resolution calls on USPS to return its mail processing operations to Jackson.
USPS shut down the local processing operation about a decade ago and moved it to Memphis, meaning all local mail has to go to Memphis to be sorted before being delivered.
“Ever since they moved it, it’s gone down hill and gotten worse and worse every year since then,” said Commissioner Gary Deaton. “And unfortunately it isn’t a local or even a state issue.
“It’s a federal issue, but we’re hoping that a request from us as a full body of commissioners will get the attention of the federal people in charge of the mail and they’ll bring it back here.
During the discussion at the caucus, various commissioners shared their stories or second-hand stories of mail that had been compromised.
Deaton said his business had checks stolen that he’d mailed to vendors and to pay bills.
Commission Chairman Mike Taylor was at the meeting and mentioned how returning the processing to Jackson would bring a few more jobs to the county.
The resolution ends by calling on those who represent Madison County in the federal government – Congressman David Kustoff and Senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty – to work to bring the mail processing back to Jackson and then promises to send a copy of the resolution via certified mail to all three representatives along with U.S. Post Master Louis DeJoy.
