A 2025 season that has started in three different ways for the Simpson family finally aligned itself on a pivotal week. Graham and Westview outlasted a fiery Lausanne squad in the fourth quarter. Jason and UT Martin blew the doors off of Ohio Valley rival Southeast Missouri. Ty and Alabama ended the longest active home winning streak in college football.
It started on Friday night. Graham was warming up for what would end up being a game of the year candidate in West Tennessee against a historical powerhouse in Lausanne. By the time the clock hit triple zeros and a last ditch hail mary hit the turf, Graham had thrown for almost 500 yards and two touchdowns as he led the Chargers to a 37-34 win.
“That’s a good football team,” Simpson said exhaustingly, “we didn’t play well, but we won.”
Fast forward 24 hours to Saturday night. Jason was leading UT Martin to their first win of the season after a slow 0-4 start. The first win couldn’t have been at a better time and against a better opponent. The Skyhawks hadn’t started 0-4 since starting 0-6 in the 2007 season, but quarterback Jase Bauer helped surge UT Martin to their first win with four combined touchdowns and 332 total yards.
“We can’t go back, but we can go forward.” That was the message all week from Jason to his Skyhawk squad who started conference play with a win, knowing that they still have a vision in front of them that is obtainable.
Finally in Athens, Georgia, Ty would lead Alabama to end the longest home winning streak in college football at 33 games. One of those 33 wins for Georgia came against Ty’s dad to open up the 2023 season. In an almost full circle moment, Ty slung the ball for 276 yards and two touchdowns through the air while also adding a rushing score. The Crimson Tide wouldn’t score in the second half, but they would play one of the greatest games of keep away anyone has seen.
“What’s the UT Martin score?” Ty would ask before answering any media question about the game that he just played in himself. After hearing about the win, he let out an excited, “ let’s go man that’s huge.”
Behind the scenes supporting all three of them stands Julie Simpson. A chaotic time period where her youngest son is lighting it up on Friday nights, her oldest fulfilling his dreams of playing at one of the highest levels, and her husband Jason who leads a locker room of young men. Julie can’t be everywhere at once, but every single person in that household feels her pride and support.
Another big slate of games awaits this weekend for the family, as they usually do. Graham and Westview play host to a regional rival in Ripley on Friday night at 7 p.m. Jason and UT Martin hit the road looking for another conference win over Lindenwood on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Ty and Alabama then look for some redemption when they host #16 Vanderbilt on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
