Roy Neal Via, 79, of Collierville, Tenn., passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, in the company of living and spiritual family after seventy-nine years of life. He was born on May 2nd, 1945.

There could scarcely be a man more enamored of sunny skies and green grass. A dog trainer, baseball coach, and certified Master Gardener, Roy was deeply fulfilled by his work among the green and active joys of creation. His love of music, especially Patsy Cline, is fondly remembered by those around him. During his years at Trinity Baptist Church, he became known for his tireless sense of humor and laughter.

He graduated from Bells High School in the class of 1963 and subsequently attended West Tennessee Business College. Afterward, he distinguished himself in his work with the Jackson Energy Authority, where he was employed in accounting for decades. His spirit, wit, and work ethic will be long appreciated by those who had the opportunity to know him.

A graveside service took place in Nance Church Cemetery in Alamo, Tenn., on July 18, 2024, at 11 a.m. Ronk Funeral Home of Alamo handled the service. Grandson Chase Via officiated.

Roy was preceded in death by his beloved parents, W. J. and Jewell Via of Bells; his brother, Maynard Via, also of Bells; and his sister, Sherry Cooke of Alamo. He is survived and fondly remembered by his two sons: Gregory Mark Via and Jason Todd Via (wife Sandy), all of Collierville. Two grandchildren, Chase Neal Via and Paige Elizabeth Via, also survive him, affectionately recalling him as their cherished “B-pa”.

In lieu of flowers, those who feel prompted are encouraged to donate to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or other diabetes-related causes. Roy, who was born with and defied type 1 diabetes, was moved by his grandmother Sadie Smith’s struggle with the disease and would find it a genuinely worthy cause.

His memory will live on through his family and all those he inspired. Please share your memories, stories, and photographs of Roy on his memorial page. Your tributes will serve as a comforting reminder of the impact Roy had on those around him and will help us all remember and celebrate his life. Ronk Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Roy Neal Via.
