Reuter wins record 3rd Stone Cup

Jackson’s local golf championship tournament – the Stone Cup – was decided for 2023 this past weekend, and the tournament’s history has a new leader.

Jeff Reuter won his third Stone Cup, breaking his tie for most championships with David Salyers.

Reuter played against J.G. Wilson, who just finished his junior year at University School of Jackson.

Reuter went up early on Wilson and fought off a comeback for a 4&3 win in the championship match. Both golfers had to win their semifinal matches earlier in the day. Reuter won his semifinal with five straight birdies for a comeback win.

Danny Green continued his championship legacy by winning his fourth Senior Stone Cup to go along with one Stone Cup championship in his history with the tournament.

Green faced David Wade in the final.

Green had to make a key putt to avoid sudden death play to claim the championship.

In the Stone Cup Legends championship, Dr. Bill Stepp repeated as the champion after a 6&5 win over Bill Henderson.

In the Pearce Cup, Trinity Christian freshman Torie Robinson pulled away from South Gibson eighth-grader 5&3 for the championship. Robinson finished second in the championship last year.

The Stone Cup started in 2008 as the official annual golf championship of Jackson and Madison County, named after Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Famer Albert Stone.

It’s played on multiple days and on multiple courses with the first day of play happening at Jackson National this year and the second day happening at Woodland Hills.

According to tournament coordinator Hank Shackelford, the day at Woodland Hills this year saw the greatest match in the tournament’s history.

Aaron Ingalls defeated Union University golf coach Ryan Chandler after both finished 18 holes at 8-under par 64 and eventually played five playoff holes with Ingalls making the clinching putt.

Friday was the qualifying round for the Stone Cup’s match play that played out Saturday and Sunday.

It was also the round for the Talkington Cup, that honors winners for each gender in middle school, high school and college. Marleigh Chinanteck and Carson Andreoni won the middle school championships. Tori Robinson and J.G. Wilson claimed the high school championships. Cecily Berry and Trace Robinson came away with the college trophies.
