Ray Cornelius Scott, age 92 of Jackson, passed away on July 4, 2024 in Parsons.
Ray was born on May 3, 1932 to Henry Herman Scott and Lena Rose Kolwyck Scott. His father was a sharecropper and he was raised on a 120 acre farm on Old Medina Road with his five siblings. On October 21, 1956 he was married to Sue Deaton Scott. Ray and Sue were 50+ year members of West Jackson Baptist Church.
A hard worker from the beginning, Ray went on to serve the City of Jackson with the Jackson Fire Department for thirty two years, twelve of which he served as Captain. He also served on the Civil Service Board for seven years after his retirement. Ray was the oldest retired firefighter with the Jackson Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Sue Deaton Scott; and his siblings, Martha Harper, Freda Russell, Audrey Scott, Richard Scott, and Mayo Scott.
He is survived by his two daughters, Susan O’Meara and Lori Hanafee (David); his grandsons, Joseph McKinney (Conie) and Joshua Baker; and great granddaughter, Juliann McKinney.
A service to celebrate the life of Ray Scott will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 1:00 pm at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Bro. David Lewelling officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m., two hours prior to the service.
