OPINION: Madison County Democratic Party calls for Republican accountability

Posted

Thursday night, the sitting President of the United States shared a video portraying former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama as primates.

We have grown accustomed to classlessness from this president. Each day seems to bring a new low. But there are few acts more explicitly racist than depicting African Americans as apes—a trope with a long, ugly history in this country.

This moment demands moral clarity. Every elected Republican in Madison County should all this action clearly what it is: racism.

Yet today, many prominent Republican officials remain silent—among them Senator Ed Jackson, State Representative Chris Todd, County Mayor A.J. Massey, and others who serve on our county commission, school board, and in elected offices across the county. Silence in the face of overt racism is not neutrality; it is acquiescence.

If the president is the standard-bearer of the Republican Party, then accountability must come from within the party itself. Rank-and-file leaders have a responsibility to speak out when that standard is violated.

Madison County is nearly 40 percent African-American. A clear and public repudiation of this behavior by local Republican leaders would be a meaningful gesture—one that signals respect for their constituents and a refusal to normalize racism, regardless of who engages in it.
