Madison’s Weissenfluh moving on to Montreat

Anna Weissenfluh has spent the past two years starting at goalkeeper for the girls’ soccer team at Madison Academic.

In that time, she’s helped lead the Lady Mustangs to a pair of district and region championships and appearances in the state tournament in Murfreesboro both years.

On Friday, she secured the next four years of her future when she signed a scholarship to continue playing, moving on to Montreat College in North Carolina.

“Playing soccer was really important in my decision-making process for picking out a college,” Weissenfluh said about the decision after signing. “But Montreat was a great fit for me because I want to go into cyber security, and their cyber security program is one of the best in the country.”

Weissenfluh said she’s taken cyber security classes while at Madison, and she’s enjoyed them enough to realize that’s what she wants to do for her career.

Being able to play soccer and compete for playing time at her chosen position just adds to the attraction for her.

“I’ve played that position for years, and it’s where I’m most comfortable,” Weissenfluh said. “And there’s a junior on the team and another freshman coming in, so I feel like I can compete for playing time.”

Weissenfluh recorded six shutouts this past season for the Lady Mustangs.

“She did a great job leading our defense from the goal,” said Madison coach Jeremy Young. “She was able to see things from the back that others in front of her couldn’t see and help them get where they needed to go to be in position for better defensive pressure.”

Young said he was impressed by Weissenfluh’s commitment to the program, work ethic and game IQ and awareness once she earned her playing time.

“Her sophomore year she didn’t play much if any because there was a senior ahead of her that we had playing,” Young said. “But she was at practice every day working hard and making sure she was ready if we needed her to go in.

“Then the last two years when she earned her playing time she made the most of it and did a great job for us. I wish I could have her another year.”

Montreat is an NAIA school in North Carolina that competes in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Tennessee schools Tennessee Wesleyan and Bryan College in East Tennessee are also in the conference.
