Local events coming up

Here’s a look at things going on in and around Jackson in the next couple weeks.

AUG. 4

Hub City Flea Market

Monthly flea markets in Jackson are back at the Jackson Fairgrounds (800 South Highland Avenue in Downtown Jackson). For the 2023 season, the flea market will be held on the first weekend of each month. Doors are open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Food Truck Fridays

Downtown Jackson and the West TN Farmers Market (91 New Market Street in Downtown Jackson) bring you Food Truck Fridays! Make plans to join them every Friday, May through November, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to experience local eateries at lunch to end your work week and support local businesses. 

First Fridays Art Walk

Through November, the Jackson Arts Council will organize “First Friday Art Walk” events in Downtown Jackson. These monthly events will take place on the first Friday of the month from 3-6 p.m. in local businesses all within walking distance of one another in Downtown Jackson’s newly designated Arts District. The public will now have regular monthly opportunities to shop for local art directly from local artists. Artists will pop up inside of the storefronts of local businesses to sell their work. The purpose of these events is to increase opportunities for the public to engage with the arts, increase opportunities for local artists to sell their work, increase arts opportunities within the Arts District, and increase walkability and economic activity in Downtown Jackson.

AMP Music Series

Do you hear it? Only the music of Jackson and West Tennessee could connect Memphis’ Beale Street and Nashville’s Music Row. Join the City of Jackson in celebrating the rich musical legacy of our region with the 2023 season of Jackson’s award-winning music venue Jackson’s Amphitheater at the Market (AMP). Located in the heart of Jackson behind the West Tennessee Farmers’ Market and within walking distance of the Jackson Walk, this week’s performer is Magi.

Hub City Film Festival

The Ned will be hosting the first Hub City Film Festival on Aug. 5-6. Hub City Film Festival is being presented by Community Foundation of West TN. The festival will showcase local filmmakers works as well as host seminars with filmmakers about topics such as producing, directing, marketing, independent filmmaking and community connectivity. The film festival is currently accepting all types of films from short films, short documentaries, feature films, feature length documentaries, music videos and others.

Voices in the Vineyard

Century Farm Winery (1548 Lower Brownsville Road in Jackson) continues its summer concert series with Dirt Pilgrims at 7 p.m. Music starts at 7 p.m. Limited tables are available. Lawn chairs are available.

Wine Down

Crown Winery (3638 East Mitchell Street in Humboldt) is back with its Wine Down concert series. Remember when booking your table reservations to also go ahead and do your pizza reservations. The pizzas time slots go fast.
Visit their website www.crownwinery.com and book online. This week’s entertainment is Kimberlie Helton. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Cotton Festival Tractor Pull

The West Tennessee Cotton Festival will be going on all weekend in Friendship. On Saturday at 7 p.m. the festival highlight will be the tractor pull, which will happen at 84 Community Center Drive. Admission is $15 and concessions are available.

Dreamgirls

The two-weekend event that is the production of Dreamgirls at The Ned (314 East Main Street in Downtown Jackson) will begin with opening night at 7 p.m. Dreamgirls is the first show in the Ned’s 2024-2025 season, directed by Monola Patterson, choregraphed by Mona Lisa Lanier, and music directed by James Henning and Lewis Thompson, with Howard Ramsby consulting. The cast features over 30 Jackson locals who bring to life the various roles in the story, including the iconic Dreams – the trio inspired by the Supremes and originally portrayed on Broadway by Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jennifer Holliday and Loretta Devine and in the film by Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, and Anika Noni Rose. Adding to the evening is the 14-member orchestra that Henning will conduct.
