Lane back home this week for Kentucky St.

The bus ride back to Jackson Saturday night and Sunday morning for Lane’s football team came after the Dragons traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., and dropped a 37-30 decision to SIAC rival Edward Waters.

For most of the game, Lane stayed within a score of the home team after they jumped out to a lead in the second quarter, but according to head coach Vyron Brown, the game could’ve gone very differently had a few things happened differently early on.

“We scored on our first possession and got the ball back and were moving down the field,” Brown said. “And we had a receiver open for a 40-yard touchdown pass that didn’t happen.

“I really believe if we’d scored on that play or that drive and gone up 14-0 that the entire game would’ve gone a lot differently. But we didn’t get the touchdown and we didn’t get a couple of calls later on that drive and they got the ball back and tied it before the quarter ended.”

Brown said every mistake the Dragons made in the loss is correctable, and the goal this week is to correct them before their next game, which is their second home game of the season.

The Dragons will host Kentucky State on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“Both teams are coming in with one win, so we’re both hungry for a victory,” Brown said. “Kentucky State has some athletes that are hungry, but I know our guys are hungry too. It should be a good game.”

The Thoroughbreds are the team that came to Jackson a year ago and defeated the Dragons on homecoming weekend.

Brown said the players who were around last year remember that and have vengeance in mind as they prepare for this game.

“But even more than that, we all just simply want to put together a complete ballgame and get a win in front of our home crowd,” Brown said. “And these guys are working hard to do that.”
