Last Friday was the first time for teams to play a real game since last season, and a few athletes – many of which are listed here – looked like they’re almost in midseason form from the beginning.
Here are a few of the highlights from Week 1 of the football season in Madison County:
Jackson Christian quarterback Austin Kelly and the coaching staff led by head coach Darby Palmer and offensive coordinator Will Rickard had a plan Friday night, and it was for Kelly to get the ball in the hands of the team’s playmakers.
Kelly’s work did that as he had a solid night, completing 15 of 21 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns.
Of those 15 completions, 12 of those passes were caught by one of the Eagles’ biggest playmakers, Jay’len Mosley. He had 12 receptions for 157 yards and caught all three of Kelly’s touchdown passes.
University School of Jackson running back Noah Spencer had 25 carries for 170 and scored both touchdowns in the Bruins’ victory.
Trinity Christian Academy running back Lekhy Thompkins was a workhorse for the Lions, carrying the ball 39 times for 175 yards and three scores in a 27-20 victory. He also caught a pass for 12 yards.
TCA receiver Brayden Waller helped out in the passing game with nine receptions for 132 yards.
South Side running back Chuck Stokes carried the ball eight times and ran for a touchdown that was a part of a 112-yard night.
