Jackson-Madison County Schools will be adding a new event to their schedule next month to honor its high school athletes.
They will be hosting the inaugural JMAC Awards Ceremony on April 12 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. JMAC stands for Jackson Madison Athletic Champions.
“This is something we’ve heard about other counties doing, so [Superintendent Marlon King] gave us marching orders to put something together to honor the athletes competing for teams representing Jackson-Madison County Schools,” said Deputy Superintendent Ricky Catlett. “So we’re going to have a night in which we honor those students who are a part of our athletics teams.”
Catlett said this is one way they wanted to demonstrate the importance of athletics in JMCSS.
“JMCSS is focused on well-rounded students based on the three As – academics, athletics and the arts,” Catlett said. “And of course everyone shows up for the games, and the kids enjoy competing in those games.
“But this is a time where those student-athletes can gather, be acknowledged by us as a school district and organization.”
Athletes and their parents along with coaches will be invited to the banquet at the civic center the night after the Jackson-Madison County Sports Hall of Fame.
“The hall of fame has been good enough to allow us to kind of piggy back off their event and give the student-athletes a great night to remember at the end of the year to reminisce and honor those who excelled,” Catlett said. “It’s going to be a good night for JMCSS.”
