The May meeting of the Jackson-Madison County School Board was a quick one that was done in 21 minutes.

A couple of groups that were honored were the JMCSS Super Writers, which were those who excelled in the District’s writing contest that included students from their senior year in high school all the way down to pre-K levels of education.

The lower levels had a drawing portion to their essay writing as well.

The Board also recognized Jana Young and her academic pentathlon team at Northeast Middle School.

The team had already won the state championship in the decathlon, continuing its tradition of excellence at the state level.

But the honor was timely as the team is competing this week in nationals at Phoenix, and they’re doing so as the team that’s ranked second nationally.

The contract for the work to be done at Malesus Innovation Center was approved. The building formerly known as Malesus Middle School will become a hub of innovation for the district beginning in August where there will be a facility for robotics competitions, various examples of STEAM educational activities and the place for middle and high school students from across the district to go for their STEAM classes.

Attendance report: Janice Hampton was the only Board member not in attendance.
