Commission appoints Moss to school board

In addition to the change in leadership for the Madison County Commission on Monday, the group did accomplish a few items of business during their 43-minute meeting.

Sheriff Julian Wiser let the legislative body know about the intentions of Madison County Sheriff’s Department to begin utilizing the building that’s being vacated by Jackson Police on Old Humboldt Road as a north precinct for MCSO.

Wiser said this is so a lot of the deputies who live on the northern end of the county or further north don’t have to go all the way to the sheriff’s office in Denmark for paperwork purposes.

It will also be beneficial for citizens from the northern end of the county who want to request reports or other items like that.

A month after the Commission failed to appoint someone to the Jackson-Madison County School Board, Marcia Moss was appointed by a vote of 15-6.

Four people applied for the position in August, and two of them pulled their applications after the vote then – leaving Moss and Dwight Jones. Moss won the vote 15-6 with the vote going along party lines with all 15 Republicans present voting for her and all non-Republicans voting for Jones.

They also appointed former Commissioner Gerry Neese to the Education Foundation board representing the County. He was appointed by a vote of 20-0 with Commissioner Aaron Ellison passing.

Joey Hale, who was a member of the capital committee this past year, made the motion to sunset the capital committee because during the budget process in the spring, a lot of the capital meetings for county department heads were simply repeated a few days later in budget committee meetings.

The compromise was to add two more members to the budget committee, bringing it to seven. That was passed, and former commission chairman Gary Deaton and Mike Bryant.
