City hosting dance for fathers, children

A Jackson tradition of the past returns next week with a few twists, but leaders from the City of Jackson hope that it will spark togetherness and unity within families throughout Jackson.

The City will host A Dance with My Dad Sneaker Ball at the Carl Perkins Civic Center on June 28 at 6:30 p.m.

“The City hosted daddy-daughter dances in the past, but that stopped for a little while when schools began hosting them,” said Whitney Billingsley, the community engagement director for Jackson Parks and Recreation. “But we talked about bringing it back this year and making it more inclusive.”

The “more inclusive” part means it’s not just for dads and their daughters.

“If a father wants to bring his son to this event, they are more than welcome to come,” Billingsley said. “Because there aren’t a lot of things that are more fun for a young boy than to come to something like this with a DJ and music and just getting down with their daddy.

“So for families that have both sons and daughters, give mom a break for an evening and bring both or all the kids with dad to have fun at this party.”

The cost is $40 per couple then $15 for any additional kids. A table for eight is $125.

Tickets are available online on the city’s website.

“Everyone is invited to dress up, put your sneakers on, bring your dad or dads bring your children and have a good time,” Billingsley said.
