1933 — 2024
Charles W. "Sonny" Webb made his move home into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the age of 91 in Bells Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Sonny was born in Madison County on Thursday, February 23, 1933, growing up in the vibrant community of Bemis, Tenn., where he graduated from J. B. Young High School in 1951. As a young man he served his country in the Tennessee Army National Guard as well as working several jobs before joining Lucent Technologies (formerly Western Electric and AT&T) for 35 years before retiring in 1992.
Sonny and Mae were active members of Poplar Heights Baptist Church for close to forty-years, where he participated in the local church missions and many other projects. He made mission trips to Brazil, assisted in church activities such as Vacation Bible School and the church Christmas drive- thru nativity scene. With his carpentry skills he would also assist in building wheelchair ramps for anyone needing them.
Most recently they have been members of Calvary Baptist Church. His failing health has limited his active attendance, but still used his serving abilities as he would work from his home to assemble shoe boxes for the church’s Samaritan Purse Christmas.
Sonny enjoyed his time at the Tennessee River with family and friends. He enjoyed traveling out west and Alaska with his wife and special friends. He was an avid fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and followed them faithfully over the years.
Some of his many hobbies were rebuilding old motorcycles, being a member of the local Christian Motorcycle Club as well as building his own grinder and knife making device. Two of his great nephews, Tyler, and Justin Moore, brought him joy as enjoyed reminiscing about them learning to hunt at Mr. Poston Morris’s farm.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Wilma Webb, a sister, Betty Flowers and brother-in-law James Flower and several nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife, Mae Moore Webb whom he celebrated fifty years of marriage in August 2023. He is also survived by nieces, Jan Cooksey and husband Barry of Jackson, Tenn., Mary Ann Fritch of Florida, sister-in-law, Janet Alexander of Jackson, TN, Brother-in-law, Phillip Moore and wife Teresa of Jackson, Tenn., Lynn Moore, and wife Brenda of Florida as well as several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews and his canine companion Ms. Bella.
A service to celebrate Sonny’s life was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2024, in the chapel of Arrington Funeral Directors with Rev. Gary Snuffin officiating, with remarks by Bruce Dorris and Jim Miller. Burial followed in Highland Memorial Gardens.
