Bruins, Eagles roll; JCM gets region victory

University School of Jackson’s football team left no doubt again in a 35-13 win over Trinity Christian.

The Bruins did most of their scoring before halftime, leading 28-6 at intermission, and the defense did its job in keeping the Lions out of the end zone for almost the entire second half to ensure the victory.

“These guys continue to hustle, work hard and focus on what they need to focus on each week,” said USJ head coach Derrick Pritchard. “They did that again tonight against a good team with some great athletes.”

Pritchard said the emphasis during practice leading up to the game was how TCA has multiple weapons on offense and not just one or two.

“Without even thinking about it, I can name you four guys on their team that are threats to go 80 yards on any play,” Pritchard said. “We couldn’t focus in on one or two guys because one of the others would’ve gotten us.

“But our guys didn’t allow that to happen.”

Noah Spencer rushed 21 times for 243 yards and two scores for the Bruins offensively, while Jackson Pugh ran for another.

Alex Wallace led the defense with 9 total tackles and an interception.

Jackson Christian 42, Goodpasture 14: The Eagles dealt with a weather delay but apparently weren’t fazed by it as the Eagles rolled to another win.

Deuce Lawrence had the big stat of the night with four touchdown runs to lead the Eagles to the big win over a school from Division II-AA – their second win over a bigger school in the season so far.

Jackson Christian will travel to USJ for a matchup of unbeaten teams in Week 4.

JCM 26, Camden 12: The Cougars are now 3-0 for the first time in 20 years after going on the road and starting Region 6-2A play with a victory.

The defense held the Lions scoreless in the second half while Michael Massey caught two touchdowns that were the difference.

North Side 35, Obion Co. 14: The defense was strong for the Indians early on as they led 21-0 after three quarters of play then both teams scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

The game endured a couple of lightning delays before finally ending late into the night.

South Side-Liberty called: The Hawks and Crusaders played a few minutes, and South Side even scored a touchdown, but lightning never left the area, restarting the weather stoppage clock at 30 minutes every time an official saw a flash.

By 9 p.m., officials agreed to not play the game and look ahead to Week 4.
